Old and large Mukenge root basket, Zambia.

This Magnificent, very large,  prestige basket is made of root from the mukenge tree. The roots on this basket has been dyed in a redbrown color. Two stylized white snakes is painted on the basket. Oil color was not common in the area and was only used on prestige objects. This basket has been used for storing cassava flour. Mukenge baskets comes from Western Zambia and were made by Mbunda, Luvale and Luchazi people. This basket was collected in Zambia C. 1961. The large size, rare color, quality and patina of long usage is fantastic.

Provenance: Doctor Bertil Örndahl (1923-2012). Örndahl worked as a doctor in many countries and travelled a lot in Africa, SE Asia and PNG in the 1960´s and collected many items during his travels.
