Mende figure, Liberia

A big Mende figure carved in hard wood with traces of kaolin paint on the forehead. This figure is carved by a known carver with a very unique carving style. The most known figure by this carver is in the collection of Yale University from Charles B. Benenson collection. Another figure by the same Carver/Atelier sold at Sotheby´s New York 1985 (described as Dan Bassa).

Provenance: Collection John & Ann-Marie Lindberg, Collected in Liberia in the 1960´s when John worked for the LAMCO project.
