A very rare and large Luba-Songye water pipe from the south eastern DR Congo area. Anthropomorphic female, made in dark stained soft/light wood. Seven pipes in this style are published in the Van Rijn, AHDRC archive, most of them belonging to museum collections. A pipe in this style most probably carved by the same carver or workshop was published 1933 in the magazine Hebdomadaire ( see photo). Two photos from the Galleri Glemminge catalogue. Provenance:
CO Hultén (1916-2015), painter, COBRA group artist and one of the founders of Imaginisterna/The Imaginists in the 1940´s. African art collector.
Hultén bought the pipe 1956 from Lau Sunde; Galleri Etnografica Copenhagen, Denmark.
